Systematic list - part 9: Wren, Robins, Chats, Wheatears & Thrushes

 

Wren Troglodytes troglodytes (10+)

Common around Mount Etna; also heard at Ragusa and at least 1 at Cava Carosello.

Robin Erithacus rubecula (c. 10)

Fairly common around Mount Etna.

 

Nightingale Luscinia megarhynchos (10)

Heard around Pedara, in the Nebrodi Mountains, Riserva Naturale Orientata Biviere di Gela (3), Ragusa, Portopalo di Capo Passero (2) and near Noto.

 

Black Redstart Phoenicurus ochruros (13)

Common around Mount Etna; also recorded at Faro.

A female at Capo Murro di Porco on 2nd May.

Whinchat Saxicola rubetra (70-80)

Good numbers of migrants around Siracusa and Capo Murro di Porco on 23rd April-24th April with smaller numbers there throughout. Also singles in the Portopalo di Capo Passero area on 29th April-30th April and 11 there on 1st May. Also on 1st May 6 at Granelli.

Stonechat Saxicola rubicola (12)

A total of 4 on Mount Etna and 2 in the Nebrodi Mountains.

Wheatear Oenanthe oenanthe (7)

1 near Capo Murro di Porco on 24th April, 1 near Portopalo di Capo Passero on 29th April and 4 at Portopalo di Capo Passero on 1st May. These were presumably migrants but 1-2 Wheatears on Mount Etna were more likely locally breeding birds (one was singing).

Eastern Black-eared Wheatear Oenanthe (hispanica) melanoleuca (2)

2 females at Portopalo di Capo Passero on 1st May.

Blue Rock Thrush Monticola solitarius (4)

A male near Pedara on 23rd April, a female at Ragusa on 30th April and a pair at Cava Grande del Cassibile on 5th May.

Blackbird Turdus merula (20+)

Small numbers at a few locations, all inland except for Agrigento and Vendicari, and 1 at Capo Murro di Porco.
