Systematic list - part 18: Moths

unidentified micro moth (2)

I'm pretty much clueless as to what these are, even their families.

unidentified moths, Monteluce, Vendicari, 29th April (left) and 28th April (right)

Diamond-back Moth Plutella xylostella (1)

1 at Monteluce on 29th April - I'm assuming it was this species but I don't know that there aren't any similar Plutella species there.

Dowd sp. Blastobasis sp. (1)

This one reminds me of Dingy Dowd Blastobasis adustella, but I'm not at all sure it's that family, let alone that species.

Case-bearer sp. Coleophora sp. (1)

1 at Monteluce on 28th April.

Gelechiid sp. Gelechiidae (20+)

This colourful species was very common at Portopalo di Capo Passero and also seen at Monteluce. No idea what they were and am only tentatively assigning it to Gelechiidae.

Synaphe moldavica (1)

Big thanks to Hugh Griffiths for identifiying this.

Pyralid sp. Pyralidae (2)

Don't know what these are... not even sure if I've assigned them to the right family...

unidentified moths, Monteluce, Vendicari, 28th April (left) and 29th April (right) - I wonder if the left hand one might be Mediterranean Flour Moth Ephestia kuehniella and I think the right hand one is probably one of the Knot-horn species Homoeosoma sp.

Six-spot Burnet Zygaenia filipendulae (1)

1 at Cava Grande del Cassibile on 5th May.

Mullein Wave Scopula marginepunctata (1)

A Geometrid at the porch light of our room at Monteluce seems to match this species, though I have no idea if there are other confusion species in Sicily that need distinguishing.

Carpet sp. Geometridae (1)

A Carpet at Cava Carosello is, so far, unidentified.

Amata kruegeri (25+)

It seems that the more widespread Nine-spotted Amata phegea is replaced by the very similar Amata kruegeri on Sicily, but as the latter is omitted from my book on day-flying moths I would appreciate correction if I have misunderstood the situation. Anyway, whatever the species they were common in the Capo Murro di Porco and Portopalo di Capo Passero areas and also seen at Cava Grande del Cassibile.
