Systematic list - part 8: Nightjars, Swifts, Near-Passerines and Woodpeckers

All dates refer to May 2013

 

Nightjar Caprimulgus europaeus (2)

1 heard El Planerón 17th, 1 heard Alastuey 19th.

 

Red-necked Nightjar Caprimulgus ruficollis (7)

6 south of Camarles on the edge of the Ebro Delta 20th, 1 heard Deltebre 20th.

Swift Apus apus (>2700)

Seen in all regions but especially along the jouney from Jaca to the Ebro Delta where 500+ Flix and large numbers all the way along the valley to the Ebro Delta

Bee-eater Merops apiaster (21)

12 at 6 sites in the El Planerón/Sástago/Candasnos region 17th, 6 Riglos/Agüero area 18th, 3 between Jaca and the Ebro Delta 20th.

1 north of Candasnos 17th.

Hoopoe Upupa epops (12)

2 El Planerón and 2 north of Sástago 17th, singles seen or heard at various other sites up as far as Jaca.

Wryneck Jynx torquilla (2)

1 heard between San Juan de la Peña and Hecho Valley 19th, 1-2 heard Alastuey 19th.

 

Black Woodpecker Dendrocopos major (-)

1 probably heard Gabardito 19th - however subsequent Green Woodpecker calls sounded remarkably Black-like as they resonated across the valley and I wasn't personally convinced the earlier call was definitely Black Woodpecker, though it certainly sounded like it.

 

Green Woodpecker Dendrocopos major (3)

At least 1 Gabardito and 2 further up the Hecho Valley 19th.

 

Great Spotted Woodpecker Dendrocopos major (2)

2 heard San Juan de la Peña 19th.
