Systematic list - part 24: Blackbirds, Orioles and allies and Old World Sparrows

 

Bobolink Delichonyx oryzivorus (1)

1 male Markham Park 25th.

 

Red-winged Blackbird Agelaius phoeniceus (93)

Fairly common, especially (but not exclusively) in marshy areas. Best counts were 32 Everglades (where best places were around Taylor Slough and south of the Mahogany Hammock turn) 18th and 20 Green Cay 25th.

Eastern Meadowlark Sturnella magna (27)

1 Washington Loop Road 14th, 3 Babcock-Webb 15th, 3 Everglades (2 south of Mahogany Hammock turn, 1 outside of the park) and 20 Snake Road (various sites especially along the tracks to the Seminole Reservation) 25th.

Common Grackle Quiscalus quiscula (136)

Small numbers seen at many locations (some rural, others urban) and larger numbers at just a few sites (largest flock was 19 Flamingo campground in the Everglades).

Boat-tailed Grackle Quiscalus major (361)

Although many more seen than the previous species, they were only recorded at a few more sites. Generally small numbers at urban locations and larger flocks at wetlands. Counts included 50 Tamiami Trail (various locations) 14th, 20 Babcock-Webb 15th, 25 along Alligator Alley 25th, 30 Snake Road 25th, 20 Markham Park 25th, 50 Green Cay 25th and 50 Wakodahatchee 27th.

2 Everglades (Flamingo car park) 18th and 3 there 24th. All were males among Brown-headed Cowbirds.

45 Chokolosee 14th (6 there on 17th), 12 flew through Babcock-Webb 15th, 50 Everglades (Flamingo car park) 18th (only 12 there on 24th), 1 Boca Chica 19th and 1 Sugarloaf 23rd.

House Sparrow Passer domesticus (12)

Only small numbers seen: up to 3 at 6 sites, all in or close to the Miami Metropolitan area.
