Systematic list - part 17: Titmice, Nuthatches, Wrens, Gnatcatchers, Bulbuls and Kinglets

Tufted Titmouse Baeolophus bicolor (6)

2 Tamiami Trail (Loop Road) 14th, 1 Washington Loop Road 14th and 3 Corkscrew Swamp 16th. The last of these included a bird carrying a faecal sac and young birds could be heard squeaking in the nest.

Brown-headed Nuthatch Sitta pusilla (1)

1 Babcock-Webb 16th. After much searching and as I was on the point of giving up as the sun went down, I finally heard one calling. It was then easily located, a great relief as Nuthatches are my favourite family of birds.

Carolina Wren Thryothorus ludovicianus (4)

1 Corkscrew Swamp 15th, 2 Ding Darling (by visitor centre)16th, 1 Corkscrew Swamp 16th (different bird to that on 15th). For what's supposed to be one of the commonest woodland birds this was a very poor showing - presumably I must have overlooked more as a result of not being familiar with their calls and song.

Blue-gray Gnatcatcher Polioptila caerulea (16)

6 Tamiami Trail (several places along the Loop Road) 14th, 8 Washington Loop Road (at several places) 14th, 2 Corkscrew Swamp 15th & 16th. All birds were seen in places where that long-hanging licheny stuff was prominent - was this coincidence or are they associated?

Red-whiskered Bulbul Pycnonotus jocosus (1)

1 Kendall 27th - after much searching including in places where others had seen them well recently I eventually located one around the intersection of SW 89th Street & SW 82nd Avenue.

Ruby-crowned Kinglet Regulus calendula (1)

1 Dry Tortugas (Garden Key) 21st - apparently a relatively scarce bird in the Dry Tortugas.
