GROUSE, QUAIL, DIVERS (LOONS), GREBES, CORMORANTS AND HERONS
Spruce Grouse / Franklin's Grouse Falcipennis (canadensis) franklinii
Int – 5 Emerald Lake 17th. I was confronted by a party of 4 on the path as I rounded the corner. Instead of running or flying away they walked right up to me! Later a different male flew to a perch high in a tree where it showed well for several minutes. One of the highlights of the holiday. There are two types of Spruce Grouse (which may represent different species) - these belonged to the Rockies form franklinii known as Franklin's Grouse.
