Wigeon (Eurasian Wigeon) x Gadwall Anas penelope x Anas strepera
Large numbers of Wigeon, Gadwall and Pintail are regularly released into the wild for shooting in the Bungay area of north Suffolk. Many of these birds can be seen at Flixton Gravel Pits but many also make it to Lowestoft where they can be observed at Leathes Ham. I visited both sites recently and found Wigeon x Gadwalls hybrids at both: a male and female at Leathes Ham (both of which had previously been photographed by Andrew Easton) and a male at Flixton (which I ddn't manage to photograph).
The female was aggressively defending a male Pintail from passing female Wigeons! This may provide a clue to a question over the identity of the pale-cheeked male at the same site, which does not exactly match expectations for Wigeon x Gadwall hybrid. In some ways this bird looks more like Gadwall x Pintail hybrids, but it doesn't seem quite right. One possible solution that would explain the anomalies is that it is a trigen, perhaps a hybrid between a Wigeon x Gadwall hybrid and a Pintail. The presence of a Wigeon x Gadwall hybrid paired to a Pintail adds plausibility to this seemingly unlikely solution!
I had assumed the first bird below from Whitlingham was wild, but I suppose it's possible that it originated from the same source.
