Although this species rarely breeds in Norfolk it can be seen in something approaching full breeding dress in late spring or early autumn (returning birds have usually appeared by early July). The species is common at coastal marshes and at a few inland sites for most of the rest of the year.
The species is unusual among waders in having a considerable size difference between males and females - females being smaller. A female Ruff is sometimes called a Reeve.
