Buff-breasted Sandpiper Calidris subruficollis (formerly Tryngites subruficollis)
A rare visitor to the UK from North America, the majority turning up in the south-west but odd birds may appear practically anywhere (with the east coast getting regular records). They have declined in recent years, at least on Scilly where small flocks would regularly appear in the autumn.
The species can be difficult to find in much of North America and some American birders are reported to have come to the UK to see their first! They are apparently barely annual in the region where I found the first bird shown below so this was perhaps as unusual a find as it would have been if I'd found it in Norfolk. Sadly the torrential rain prevented good quality photographs!
