July 2011
Sunday 31st July
Having endured far more weekends without any serious birding than I would ever chose, I was keen to get out this weekend. Sadly it didn't happen until this afternoon when I took a look round Swanton Morley. Apart from things like Kingfisher, Little Egret and Turtle Dove things were pretty quiet on the avian front. Dragonflies included a few Brown Hawkers and moths included what appears to be my first Eucosma hohenwartiana.
Next I decided to try Bintree Wood - a site I've neglected recently but is the last site this side of Fakenham where I know Willow Tits to have occurred in recent years. I also thought might be good for moths and it was moths that provided the only real interest today. I didn't stay to dark but it does seem like a site worth investigating further for moths. Almost the first moth I saw was another Eucosma hohenwartiana, closely followed by a few Udea lutealis, 2-3 Hook-marked Straw Moths and a host of common grass moths. Antler Moth and Shaded Broad-bar were both my second records while other Geometrids included my first Blood-vein of the year, a few Common Carpets and, best of all, my first Sharp-angled Carpet.
Back home it was now getting dark and after last night's terrible performance (1 Garden Pebble and 1 Mother of Pearl) I decided to put the MV light on. I've not used that much recently as with just the normal bedroom light I'm attracting too many moths to be able to process in the limited time I have. A brief blast of the MV light was enough to bring in a slightly larger haul and among them were some good ones. My favourite was the tiny but attractive Mompha propinquella. This was my first, as was a Cloaked Minor (thanks Jon for confirmation of that). Bryotropha affinis was my second, 2 Lesser Broad-bordered Yellow Underwings were new for the year and Flame Carpet and 2 Shuttle-shaped Darts were my first for a few months and so presumably the start of a second generation. The rest were:
3 Brown House-moths, White-shouldered House-moth, Blastobasis lacticolella, Hook-marked Straw Moth, 2 Clepsis consimilana, Eucosma cana, 2 Garden Grass-veneers, 3 Pearl Veneers, Eudonia mercurella, 3 Garden Pebbles, Udea lutealis, Mother of Pearl, Bee Moth, Emmelina monodactyla, 2 Dwarf Cream Waves, Red Twin-spot Carpet, Common Carpet and Flame Shoulder.
Friday 29th July
Best of tonight's moths was another Small Rivulet; the rest were:
Brown House-moth, Pearl Veneer, 2 Garden Pebbles, Mother of Pearl, Endotricha flammealis, Trachycera advenella, Red Twin-spot Carpet, Common Pug and 2 Common Rustic aggs.

Thursday 28th July
Fewer moths again tonight but they included another Rustic and two new for the year: Lime-speck Pug and Lesser Yellow Underwing. The rest were:
Brown House-moth, White-shouldered House-moth, Hook-marked Straw Moth, Twenty-plume Moth, 3 Garden Grass-veneers, Crambus perlella, Pearl Veneer, Small Blood-vein, Riband Wave, Red Twin-spot Carpet, Wormwood Pug, Double Square-spot, Uncertain and Fan-foot.

Wednesday 27th July
Still at least 1 Yellow Wagtail at Thornham. The evening's moths included my first Bryotropha domestica (at least the first I've identified - have a feeling I may have passed them off as Brown House-moths before). Gold Triangle and Ruby Tiger were species I don't get many of and the rest were:
Hook-marked Straw Moth, Dark Fruit-tree Tortrix, Argyrotaenia ljungiana, Eucosma cana, 2 Twenty-plume Moths, 6 Garden Grass-veneers, Crambus perlella, 3 Pearl Veneers, 5 Eudonia mercurella, Garden Pebble, 5 Mother of Pearls, Endotricha flammealis, 2 Emmelina monodactyla, Small Blood-vein, Dwarf Cream Wave, Riband Wave, Common Carpet, Common Footman, Smoky Wainscot and Uncertain or Rustic.
Update Sept: thanks to Jon for gen detting the one I thought might possilbly be Caryocolum - it was in fact Bryotropha similis (I can see that now!).
Update November: I now think that one of the 5 Eudonia mercurella was in fact Scoparia subfusca - I'd assumed it was plain because it was worn, but it seems to match subfusca ok. Having re-identified my old records of subfusca this now becomes my first (though I still have some other Scoparia to review).
Tuesday 26th July
Got a brief and distant view of a Montagu's Harrier in my lunch break today, and a Whimbrel heard flying over. Just 9 moths tonight:
Garden Grass-veneer, Garden Pebble, 5 Mother of Pearls and Endotricha flammealis.
Monday 25th July
The road by the reservoir at Thornham was even birdier than on Friday - at least 1 Yellow Wagtail still there and loads more common birds. The highlights from tonight's moths were my first ever Ebulea crocealis and a Dun-bar. Another worn moth defied ID but the rest were:
Agonopterix heracliana (or ciliella), Agonopterix arenella, Hook-marked Straw Moth, Eucosma cana, 5 Garden Grass-veneers, 6 Pearl Veneers, possible Scoparia ambigualis, 5 Mother of Pearls, 2 Emmelina monodactyla, Small Fan-footed Wave, 3 Small Dusty Waves, Riband Wave, 2 Dingy Footmen and Clay.
Sunday 24th July
11 moths tonight was, I suppose, better than last night's single Endotricha flammealis. The 12 included my first Agriphila tristella of the year, a very worn thing I can't identify and these:
Dark Fruit-tree Tortrix, Garden Grass-veneer, Crambus perlella, Pearl Veneer, Trachycera advenella, 2 Small Fan-footed Waves, Dingy Footman and 2 Buff Ermines.
Friday 22nd July
In my lunch break I found that the minor road at Thornham which runs past the reservoir was heaving with common birds, best of which was Yellow Wagtail. A few moths tonight didn't include anything amazing:
Paraswammerdamia nebulella, 2 Brown House-moths, Oegoconia sp., Dark Fruit-tree Tortrix, Eucosma cana, 2 Twenty-plume Moths, Crambus perlella, 2 Pearl Veneers, 2 Eudonia mercurella, Dingy Footman, 4 Common Footmen, Double Square-spot, Dot Moth, 2 Dark Arches, 2 Common Rustic aggs., Dusky Sallow, 5 Uncertains and Silver Y.

Thursday 21st July
Given the windy conditions I didn't expect many moths tonight and I imagined those I did get would be the bigger sturdier types. I was right about the number but not the type - all 5 were micros including my first Trachycera advenella of the year and another Phtheochroa inopiana. The others were Garden Grass-veneer, Crambus pascuella and Crambus perlella.

Wednesday 20th July
Top moth this evening was a small carpet-type that I didn't recognise at all - turned out to be a Barred Rivulet - a good record with only 3 reported in Norfolk in the last 8 years. Next best was my second ever Timothy Tortrix. Also:
Brown House-moth, Hook-marked Straw Moth, 6 Twenty-plume Moths, 3 Garden Grass-veneers, 2 Crambus pascuella, 2 Pearl Veneers, Eudonia mercurella, 2 Mother of Pearls, 3 Endotricha flammealis, Small Blood-vein, 4 Small Fan-footed Waves, Dwarf Cream Wave, Small Dusty Wave, Red Twin-spot Carpet, 2 Common Footmen and 2 Uncertains.
Tuesday 19th July
Tonight a Lychnis was only my second ever and 2 Common Rustic aggs. were new for the year. Also:
Oegoconia sp., Hook-marked Straw Moth, 3 Twenty-plume Moths, 2 Garden Grass-veneers, 3 Pearl Veneers, Eudonia mercurella, 4 Endotricha flammealis, Small Blood-vein, Dwarf Cream Wave, Single-dotted Wave, 4 Riband Waves, Sandy Carpet, 2 Early Thorns, Scalloped Oak, Willow Beauty, Elephant Hawkmoth, Buff Ermine and Fan-foot.

Monday 18th July
Ypsolopha scabrella was only my second and Yellow-tail was my first here this year. The rest of this evening's moths were:
Tinea trinotella, Brown House-moth, Agonopterix heracliana (or ciliella)*, 5 Oegoconia sp.*, 9 Twenty-plume Moths, 2 Garden Grass-veneers, 2 Pearl Veneers, Eudonia mercurella, Udea lutealis, 2 Mother of Pearls, 4 Endotricha flammealis, 2 Small Blood-veins, 2 Small Fan-footed Waves, Dwarf Cream Wave, 3 Small Dusty Waves, Single-dotted Wave, Riband Wave, Early Thorn, Dingy Footman, 3 Common Footmen, Bright-line Brown-eye, Uncertain and 2 Fan-foots.
* Update Sept: a gen. det. by Jon revealed that 1 of the 5 Oegoconia was Oegoconia deauratella - thanks Jon! Also I've since managed to check the hind wing of the Agonopterix and it was indeed Agonopterix heracliana.

Saturday 16th July
We were out at friends' this evening until after dark so fewer moths recorded:
Eucosma cana, 8 Twenty-plume Moths, Phlyctaenia coronata, Mother of Pearl, Chinese Character, Small Blood-vein, Dwarf Cream Wave, Small Dusty Wave, Single-dotted Wave, Scalloped Oak, 3 Willow Beauties, Engrailed, Smoky Wainscot and Uncertain.
Friday 15th July
An excellent night for moths with 'lifers' abounding! One new macro (Nutmeg) and 4-5 new micros: one would need dissecting for a firm ID but is most likely Coleophora alcyonipennella, probable Bryotropha terrella*, Brachmia blandella, Cochylidia implicitana and something which has so far escaped identification - looks a bit like Pammene aurita but I don't think the costal spots are prominent enough). Other interesting records were another Borkhausenia fuscescens, 2 Argyrotaenia ljungiana, an Oak Nycteoline and a Large White butterfly. The rest, mostly micros, were:
Tinea semifulvella, Paraswammerdamia nebulella, 3 Brown House-moths, 5 Oegoconia sp.*, Dark Fruit-tree Tortrix, 4 Clepsis consimilana, 17 Twenty-plume Moths, 2 Garden Grass-veneers, 5 Pearl Veneers, 2 Eudonia mercurella, Endotricha flammealis, 2 Bee Moths, 2 Emmelina monodactyla, Small Blood-vein, 2 Small Fan-footed Waves, 2 Dwarf Cream Waves, 2 Small Dusty Waves, Riband Wave, Large Twin-spot Carpet, Early Thorn, Scalloped Oak, Dingy Footman, Common Footman, Double Square-spot, Dark Arches, Uncertain and Fan-foot.
Update Sept: Thanks to some gen. dets. by Jon I'm now able to confirm that the probable Bryotropha terrella was indeed that species and among the Oegoconia were both Oegoconia quadripuncta and Oegoconia deauratella. Thanks Jon!

unidentified moth, Bawdeswell, 15th July - the nearest thing I can find is Pammene aurita, some of which appear rather similar but in all the photos I've found of this species, the spots along the costa are much more prominent - so please let me know if you are able to identify this!

Check out the design work on this Buff Arches! Apparently common but new to me - and what an amazing moth! I don't know about you but I find it harder to believe things like this evolved purely by chance than I do to believe there's a Creator God who had some hand in it! Something that looked like a Drinker or perhaps an Oak Eggar would have been new for the year had it not flown back out of the window without settling and allowing a positive ID. Also this lot:
2 Brown House-moth, Blastobasis lacticolella, Blastodacna hellerella, Eucosma cana, 7 Twenty-plume Moths, Garden Grass-veneer, 2 Crambus pascuella, Dipleurina lacustrata* , 3 Endotricha flammealis, Bee Moth, 2 Small Blood-veins, 4 Dwarf Cream Waves, Small Dusty Wave, Single-dotted Wave, 2 Riband Waves, Common Pug, 2 Willow Beauties, 2 Common Footmen, 2 Double Square-spots, Smoky Wainscot, Uncertain and Fan-foot.
*Update Nov 11 - revised the ID of what I thought was Eudonia mercurella - now appears to be a dark Dipleurina lacustrata.

Sunday 10th July
I think I must be coming close to having had more new species of moth this year than days in the year... tonight's first was Agapeta zoegana. Another Phtheochroa inopiana was good and 2 Dingy Footmen were my first here this year. 2 Agonopterix sp. (either heracliana or ciliella) were my first of this pair since April - so I presume the start of a new generation? Other than these it was more standard stuff, though in good numbers (still with just the normal bedroom light, the MV remains in hibernation until I catch up):
Tinea semifulvella, Paraswammerdamia nebulella, 3 Brown House-moths, Oegoconia sp., 2 Blastobasis lacticolella, 2 Clepsis consimilana, 16 Twenty-plume Moths, 2 Garden Grass-veneers, Crambus pascuella, 2 Scoparia ambigualis, 7 Endotricha flammealis, 2 Bee Moths, 2 Small Blood-veins, Small Fan-footed Wave, 3 Dwarf Cream Waves, Small Dusty Wave, Early Thorn, Swallow-tailed Moth, Willow Beauty, 2 Common Footmen, Clay, Smoky Wainscot, Uncertain, Silver Y, 2 Snouts and 6 Fan-foots.
Saturday 9th July
A new moth tonight was, I think, Borkhausenia fuscescens. Actually I have a suspcion that I may have overlooked others in the past - at first it looked a bit like a tiny Brown House-moth and I'm pretty sure I've had inexplicably small Brown House-moths before... Apart from that Cabbage Moth was new for the year. The rest were:
Brown House-moth, Celypha lacunana, 2 Bramble Shoot Moths, 5 Twenty-plume Moths, 5 Garden Grass-veneers, Pearl Veneer, Scoparia ambigualis, 2 Eudonia mercurella, Phlyctaenia coronata, Mother of Pearl, 4 Endotricha flammealis, Emmelina monodactyla, Small Blood-vein, Small Fan-footed Wave, 2 Single-dotted Waves, Scalloped Oak, Common Footman, Bright-line Brown-eye, 3 Uncertains, Silver Y, 3 Snouts and Fan-foot.
Friday 8th July
A Little Owl showed briefly from the hide at Abbey Farm, Flitcham in my lunch break, which was pleasing as each of the last two times I've visited this site I've arrived to find people apparently watching "several" Little Owls and when they've pointed them out they've either been the tops of fence posts or rabbits. Tonight's moths were:
Paraswammerdamia nebulella, 2 Brown House-moths, 4 Twenty-plume Moths, 2 Scoparia pyralella (?), Phlyctaenia coronata, Mother of Pearl, 2 Endotricha flammealis, Bee Moth, Emmelina monodactyla, Small Blood-vein, Small Fan-footed Wave, 2 Dwarf Cream Waves, 2 Small Dusty Waves, Riband Wave, Wormwood Pug, Early Thorn, Scalloped Oak, Clay, Uncertain, 2 Snouts and Fan-foot.
Thursday 7th July
I stopped off at Burnham Norton amongst other places during my lunch break, seeing a Green Sandpiper. Tonight's moths:
Paraswammerdamia nebulella, Coleophora sp.*, Brown House-moth, Oegoconia sp., 9 Twenty-plume Moths, 2 Garden Grass-veneers, 2 Scoparia sp. (probably ambigualis), Dipleurina lacustrata, Eudonia mercurella, Mother of Pearl, 2 Small Blood-veins, Small Fan-footed Wave, Small Dusty Wave, Riband Wave, Common Pug, Double-striped Pug, 2 Scalloped Oaks, Mottled Beauty, Double Square-spot, Dot Moth, Bright-line Brown-eye, Smoky Wainscot, Light Arches, 2 Uncertains and Snout.
Update Sept: Jon has gen detted the Coleophora - it's Coleophora follicularis - thanks Jon!
Wednesday 6th July
Tonight's moths included what I think must be a female Large Fruit-tree Tortrix although it was a bit on the small side for females of this species - is there anything else that looks like this? Also:
Parornix sp., Blastobasis lacticolella, Hook-marked Straw Moth, Twenty-plume Moth, Garden Grass-veneer, 3 Scoparia sp., Dipleurina lacustrata, Eudonia mercurella, Bee Moth, 4 Small Fan-footed Waves, 2 Riband Waves, Large Twin-spot Carpet, Double-striped Pug, 2 Scalloped Oaks, 2 Willow Beauties, Mottled Beauty, Dot Moth, Smoky Wainscot, Uncertain, Silver Y and Snout.
Tuesday 5th July
A mooch around Syderstone Common at lunch time produced a fine Hobby. Tonight's moths included my first Wormwood Pug of the year and another Small Angle Shades (bringing this year's total to 4 despite having never seen any in previous years). Also these:
3 Brown House-moths, Bramble Shoot Moth, Twenty-plume Moth, 2 Scoparia sp., Bee Moth, 4 Small Blood-veins, Dwarf Cream Wave, Large Twin-spot Carpet, probable Common Pug, Common Footman, Smoky Wainscot and Dark Arches.
Monday 4th July
Took a lunchtime stroll at Houghton in a place I'd seen Willow Tits at this time of year before. No sign, but some Ringlets and moths: Clepsis consimilana, Gypsonoma sp. and Brown Silver-line.
Back at home I didn't have the light on for long at all, but still got a few moths and these included my first Dark Umber, my second Phtheochroa inopiana, the first Dusky Sallow and Garden Rose Tortrix for the year, and these:
Brown House-moth, White-shouldered House-moth, Blastobasis lacticolella, Clespsis comsimilana, 4 Twenty-plume Moths, 2 Garden Grass-veneers, 2 Emmelina monodactyla, 2 Small Blood-veins, 2 Dwarf Cream Waves, 2 Riband Waves, Large Twin-spot Carpets, Double Square-spot, Uncertain and Snout.

Sunday 3rd July
I've not got enough time to sort out millions of moths every night so have stopped using the MV light until I catch up, but even so they keep on coming! Top moth tonight was my first Juniper Webber - a very smart moth and not particularly common round here either (I think it's the first record for this 10k square). Took me a while to work out what it was as it looks deceptively like a Pyralid leading me to spend my time looking through the wrong family! Udea lutealis, July Highflyer and Small Rivulet were all new for the year for here. I recently lost confidence in separating Uncertains from Rustics and many have gone down unidentified, but I'm reasonably confident that a proportion of them, if not all of them so far this year, have been Uncertains. However one of tonight's stood out as different - I think it's a Rustic. Less welcome inside the house, and just before I wanted to go to bed, was another Bat. It peformed a circuit consisting of circling the bedroom then the landing and then downstairs before repeating this circuit at extraordinary velocity time after time. I simply had no idea how to even attempt to catch it and just had to sit it out and wait for it to find the window again and depart. Eventually, after what seemed like hours and what must have been hundreds of circuits it disappeared, presumably having found the exit! Meanwhile Vitty slept beneath it blissfully unaware! The rest of tonight's moths were:
Paraswammerdamia nebulella, 3 Blastobasis lacticolella, 2 Hook-marked Straw Moths, 3 Clepsis consimilana, Grey or Flax Tortrix, Celypha lacunana, 12 Twenty--plume Moths, 5 Garden Grass-veneers, Crambus pascuella, Scoparia pyralella, Dipleurina lacustrata* , 3 Phlyctaenia coronata, 3 Bee Moths, Common Emerald, 6 Small Blood-veins, 3 Small Fan-footed Waves, 2 Dwarf Cream Waves, 2 Small Dusty Waves, 5 Riband Waves, 2 Swallow-tailed Moths, Willow Beauty, 6 Common Footmen, Buff Ermine, Flame, 2 Flame Shoulders, 5 Double Square-spots, Dot Moth, 2 Bright-line Brown-eyes, 2 Clays, Smoky Wainscot, Brown Rustic, 3 Marbled Minor aggs., 9 Uncertains, 2 Mottled Rustics, 5 Snouts and 5 Fan-foots (my highest count of Fan-foots yet).
*Update Nov 11 - corrected ID of Dipleurina lacustrata.
Saturday 2nd July
Once again I didn't have time to go birding today but I did join Rob and friends in the evening for a brief spot of mothing at Holt Lowes. Roding Woodcocks entertained although I didn't get to see the source of the churring... It turned out to be a bit cold for moths and we gave up fairly quickly, but I did manage 3 new macros: Satin Wave, Plain Wave and 3 Pine Hawkmoths. The rest were:
Coleophora sp., Clepsis consimilana, Grey or Flax Tortrix, Gypsonoma dealbana, 5+ Scoparia sp., several Endotricha flammealis, Pempelia palumbella, Phlycita roborella, 2 Single-dotted Waves, Double-striped Pug, Brimstone Moth, Peppered Moth, 2 Mottled Beauties, Dingy Footman, Scarce Footman, 3 Common Footmen, Ruby Tiger, Clay, 2+ Dark Arches and 3 Uncertains.
Back at home I found no moths as the windows had been closed! Needless to say I opened them again, but just managed the following before I turned in, plus my first Udea prunalis of the year:
Blastobasis lacticolella, 3 probable Scoparia ambigualis, Bee Moth, Dwarf Cream Wave, Small Dusty Wave, Brimstone Moth, 3 Common Footmen, Uncertain or Rustic and Mottled Rustic.
Friday 1st July
James had let me know that the apparent Red-breasted Goose x Barnacle Goose hybrid was back at Whitlingham last night so, as I had to be in Norwich anyway, I rolled up this evening to have a look. It was still there, albeit a bit distant, and so was the presumed Lesser White-fronted Goose x Ross's or Snow Goose, a Greylag x Canada Goose and some domestic Swan Goose x Greylag Goose hybrids.
Another good night for moths. Scarce Footman was a new macro for me but a far more unusual record was what appears to be Spruce Bud Moth - last recorded in Norfolk in 2005! Otherwise Pseudagyrotoza conwagana was my second ever and there was another White Plume Moth. Mother of Pearl and Scalloped Oak were new for the year and there was this lot:
Paraswammerdamia nebulella, 2 Brown House-moths, 2 Clepsis consimilana, possible Grey Tortrix, Bramble Shoot Moth, 2 Twenty-plume Moths, 3 Garden Grass-veneers, 5 Scoparia sp., Bee Moth, Small Blood-vein, 4 Dwarf Cream Waves, 2 Small Dusty Waves, 4 Riband Waves, Brimstone Moth, Swallow-tailed Moth, Mottled Beauty, 2 Common Footmen, 3 Flames, 4 Double Square-spots, 2 Bright-line Brown-eyes, 6 Uncertains, 2 Mottled Rustics, 2 Silver Ys, 2 Fan-foots and Small Fan-foot.
