August 2011
Wednesday 31st August
Saw a Red Kite at New Holkham in my lunch break, followed by 3 Buzzards not far away.
I never knew about the self-healing properties of the Nikon Coolpix P5000 but the wonky lens case appears to have straightened up and it now only makes a slight knocking noise each time it extends/retracts! Maybe it doesn't need fixing or replacing after all! Still, I'd like to get something else just in case, but am struggling to find anything that's significantly better and has such a good adaptor system for digiscoping.
A good night for moths with my first ever Teleiopsis diffinis, second Centre-barred Sallow (following my first on Sunday) and my first Vine's Rustic for 3 years. Also:
Brown House-moth, 2 White-shouldered House-moths, Agriphila tristella, Small Dusty Wave, Double-striped Pug, Flame Shoulder, Large Yellow Underwing, 8 Square-spot Rustics and Snout.

Tuesday 30th August
Hot on the heels of my first ever at Blickling just over a week ago, my first Iron Prominent for home appeared tonight. Also a White-point and a Tortrix that I think was either Acleris laterana or Strawberry Tortrix (update - thanks to Jon for gen detting it - it was Acleris laterana). Also:
White-shouldered House-moth, Agriphila tristella, Mother of Pearl, Green Carpet, Double-striped Pug, Setaceous Hebrew Character, 4 Square-spot Rustics, Common Wainscot and Snout.

Best moths tonight were my first Flounced Rustic for the year, Tinea semifulvella and Common Marbled Carpet. The rest were:
4 White-shouldered House-moths, Blastobasis lignea, Mother of Pearl, 2 Garden Carpets, Common Carpet, 3 Green Carpets, Double-striped Pug, Willow Beauty, 3 Setaceous Hebrew Characters, 3 Square-spot Rustics and Silver Y.

Sunday 28th August
With low moth totals for the last few days and not having a working camera to photograph them all anyway, I decided I could afford the time to boost the numbers a bit by starting to use the MV light again - it's been in hibernation for most of the summer as I've not had time to process the large numbers of moths it can attract. It proved effective tonight with 35 moths including my first ever Centre-barred Sallow and an unprecedented total of 12 Setaceous Hebrew Characters. The rest were:
White-shouldered House-moth, 2 Agriphila tristella, 2 Ringed China-marks, Emmelina monodactyla, Small Dusty Wave, Garden Carpet, Wormwood Pug, 4 Brimstone Moths, 2 Flame Shoulders, 3 Large Yellow Underwings, Lesser Broad-bordered Yellow Underwing, 2 Square-spot Rustics and Common Wainscot.
Actually my camera isn't quite dead, but it's very sick and from the racket it makes when it attempts to retract the wonky lens as I turn it off I don't think it will be many uses before it completely keels over. For now it's OK for emergencies though, and that includes new moths like this one:

Saturday 27th August
I headed up to Sheringham this morning but when I arrived it began to rain heavily. Eventually it stopped and I headed out. First bird I saw was a Great Snipe flying west! OK, I'm not claiming this one, but it was a big heavy-bellied snipe (not a Woodcock) with a steady flight quite unlike a Common Snipe. Would have been a very good start if I'd been able to clinch it, but sadly that wasn't to be. At least on this occasion I didn't come away frustrated that I'd stuffed it up - there's no way I could have got any more on it in the circumstances.
That wasn't the first of many migrants, however. A couple of Yellow Wagtails flew west and there were a couple of Whinchats in East Field, but that's about the lot. Oh, and a Marsh Harrier, and I flushed a Green Sandpiper. Best bird from a Sheringham perspective was Treecreeper in the wood. A variety of common butterflies seen and day-flying moths were Common Carpet, Yellow Shell and Silver Y. Also 2 Migrant Hawkers.
I didn't much fancy spending half the day in the company of crowds looking for, and mostly not seeing, Greenish and Bonelli's Warblers at Cromer, so decided to give that a miss, however as I wasn't far away I was tempted to go and see the escaped Burrowing Owl between East Runton and Cromer. Never a serious candidate for vagrancy this wasn't an 'insurance tick', just an opportunity to see a cool bird that looked like it could have been wild even though everyone knew it wasn't. And just in case anyone did think it might have got here on its own (I did hear someone musing about it being ship assisted) it wasn't just very tame like the ones in USA, it was ludicrously tame. We approached it to about six feet and it didn't bat an eyelid - it was only a barrier that prevented us from getting even closer!
While I was watching it I was shown an image of the Bonelli's Warbler on the back of someone's camera. It was in full view and the photographer assured me it had been showing very well for a prolonged period. With this news I changed my mind and decided to give it ago after all. It showed well again shortly before I arrived, apparently, but needless to say it didn't while I was there. I did catch a brief glimpse of the Greenish Warbler though, which, unlike some of the others around me, I didn't identify on the basis of it being "green".
No excitement among tonight's moths: Pearl Veneer, Agriphila tristella, Small Dusty Wave, 2 Green Carpets and Square-spot Rustic.

Tonight's moths:
2 White-shouldered House-moths, Pearl Veneer, 5 Agriphila tristella, Mother of Pearl, Green Carpet, Brimstone Moth, 3 Square-spot Rustics and White-point.
Monday 22nd August
Readers who come here looking for birds and not moths will probably have stopped coming here at all by now, but if not you'll be pleased to hear that I dropped by Coolpix tonight so no more pictures of moths until I've fixed or replaced it! There were only 4 moths tonight anyway (2 White-shouldered House-moths, Agriphila tristella and Setaceous Hebrew Character). My DSLR is still working:

Sunday 21st August
Two thirds of tonight's moths were micros and among them a couple of mildly interesting ones: my second ever Skin Moth Monopis laevigella and Aroga velocella, the latter a species I'd not recorded at home before (my first at Buxton Heath last Saturday). Also these:
Brown House-moth, Bryotropha domestica, 2 Oegoconia sp., Celypha lacunana, 2 Pearl Veneers, 6 Agriphila tristella, Garden Pebble, Common Carpet, Green Carpet, Double-striped Pug, 2 Brimstone Moths, Large Yellow Underwing, Six-striped Rustic, Square-spot Rustic and Straw Dot.

Saturday 20th August
Desperate to do some birding but still with very little time I opted for some a stroll round Foxley Wood, not that that's ever hugely productive for birds. Today was no exception and the highlights, so much as you can call them that, were definitely not avian. An unfamilar bush-cricket proved, I think, to be a Long-winged Conehead - a recent colonist - and most of the grass moths seen appeared to be Agriphila selasella. A total of 3 Red Foxes also seen in two places there.
In the evening I joined Rob again for some mothing, this time at Blickling. Things were slow so we moved location but the new spot didn't yield much more either so we gave up earlier than expected. Even so, despite not many moths some were new to me: Helcystogramma rufescens, Chequered Fruit-tree Tortrix, Eudemis profundana, 2 Iron Prominents and Copper Underwing. Also recorded were:
Endothenia quadrimaculana, 2 Agriphila selasella, 2 Pearl Veneers, Agriphila tristella, 2 Ringed China-marks, Trachycera advenella, 2 Phycita roborella, Riband Wave, Green Carpet, Yellow-tail, Dingy Footman, 3 Flame Shoulders, 2 Large Yellow Underwings, 3 Setaceous Hebrew Characters, 2 Antler Moths, Common Wainscot, probable Middle-barred Minor, Cloaked Minor, Common Rustic agg. and 3 Straw Dots.
Little Owl and Hedgehog were seen on the way home and back at base was my first Square-spot Rustic for the year, a Garden Rose Tortrix, and these:
3 Brown House-moths, White-shouldered House-moth, Oegoconia sp., Blastobasis lignea, Pearl Veneer, 5 Agriphila tristella, Emmelina monodactyla, Currant Pug, Willow Beauty and Silver Y.
Friday 19th August
Although common and widespread, Six-striped Rustic was nevertheless a new moth for me tonight, while Endothenia quadrimaculana was new for the year (my 3 records in each of the last 3 years have all been within about a week of each other). Green Carpet was my first of the autumn generation. The rest were:
Brown House-moth, 2 White-shouldered House-moths, Oegoconia sp., 2 Pearl Veneers, Agriphila tristella, Mother of Pearl, 3 Emmelina monodactyla, Wormwood Pug, Currant Pug, Flame Shoulder and White-point.

Regular readers may be wondering if I've forgotten what birds are, but just to prove I haven't I saw a Greenshank at Thornham in my lunch break. Still not many moths, but two new for the year tonight: Eudonia angustea and what I think was my second ever Paraswammerdamia albicapitella. Also:
Garden Grass-veneers, 3 Pearl Veneers, 3 Agriphila tristella, Garden Pebble, 2 Emmelina monodactyla, Wormwood Pug, Lesser Broad-bordered Yellow Underwing and Straw Dot.

Tuesday 16th August
At least 3 Yellow-legged Gulls at Houghton today, but only a small part of the flock was easily visible today.
Tonight delivered what I think must be my best moth to date... a Nemapogon wolffiella. This is only the second record for Norfolk following one at Stibbard in 2010. Although not far away, Stibbard is just across the border between Norfolk's two vice-counties, so that makes mine the first record for VC27.
Also good, if not on quite the same level, was what I think must be Agriphila selasella (though I'm never very confident about these). The rest were:
4 Brown House-moths, 4 White-shouldered House-moths, Bryotropha domestica, Oegoconia sp., Garden Grass-veneer, 6 Pearl Veneers, 4 Agriphila tristella, Garden Pebble, 2 Mother of Pearls, Riband Wave, Dark-barred Twin-spot Carpet, Lime-speck Pug, Wormwood Pug, Double-striped Pug, Brimstone Moth, 4 Willow Beauties, Lesser Broad-bordered Yellow Underwing and Spectacle.

Monday 15th August
A Large Yellow Underwing was, surprisingly, my first here this year, but it was the micros that provided most interest with Leek Moth, another Emmetia marginea and a Phyllonorycter sp. which I've not seen before. The latter is not as distinctive as it looks, with several very similar species possible, but none that I've seen before (update Sept: Jon has kindly attempted a gen. det. on this but it's proved to be a female and even with a gen. det. ID is not reliable for females - he thinks it looks most like Phyllonorycter hollis though). Other moths were:
Parornix sp. (probably anglicella), Brown House-moth, White-shouldered House-moth, Oegoconia sp., Blastobasis lignea, Garden Grass-veneer, 5 Pearl Veneers, 2 Dipleurina lacustrata*, Garden Carpet, 2 Double-striped Pugs, Yellow-barred Brindle, 4 Willow Beauties and Marbled Minor agg.
*Update November - I've now reidentified the 2 Eudonia mercurella as Dipleurina lacustrata - although dark and late they seem to key out to this species with pale spots, broken subterminal line and thickly bordered and well-toothed postmedian line.
Sunday 14th August
Not many moths tonight but some interesting ones - Pyrausta despicata was probably best. The others were:
2 White-shouldered House-moths, Bryotropha domestica, Blastobasis lignea, 2 Pearl Veneers, 3 Agriphila tristella, 2 Garden Pebbles, Amblyptilia acanthadactyla, Emmelina monodactyla, Currant Pug, 2 Brimstone Moths, 4 Willow Beauties, Spectacle and Straw Dot.

Saturday 13th August
Spent the evening mothing with Rob at Buxton Heath - perhaps not as good as Kelling last week but several interesting species. A few were new to me: Horse Chestnut Leaf-miner, 3 Argyresthia goedartella, Aristotelia ericinella, Aroga velocella, 2 Eupoecilia angustana, Ancylis uncella, 5 Eudonia truncicolella, Narrow-winged Pug and Beautiful Yellow Underwing.
Other records that were noteworthy (if only because I don't get many or any at home) were Monopis weaverella, Catoptria pinella, 15 Water Veneers, Ringed China-mark, 2 Phycita roborella, Scalloped Hook-tip, 3 Black Arches, Scarce Footman, White-line Dart, 3 True Lover's Knots and Antler Moth. Less notable records were:
Paraswammerdamia nebulella (or possibly Swammerdamia caesiella), Carcina quercana, 6 Pearl Veneers, Mother of Pearl, Endotricha flammealis, Riband Wave, Wormwood Pug, Brimstone Moth, Common White Wave, Dingy Footman, 4 Flame Shoulders, Lesser Broad-bordered Yellow Underwing, Setaceous Hebrew Character, Common Rustic agg. and Straw Dot.
Back at home I only had the light on and windows open very briefly so just Blastobasis lignea and Willow Beauty.
Friday 12th August
At least 3 Yellow-legged Gulls at Houghton in my lunch break. Tonights moths were:
3 Brown House-moths, White-shouldered House-moth, Oegoconia sp.*, 4 Pearl Veneers, 2 Agriphila tristella, 2 Emmelina monodactyla, Flame Carpet, Garden Carpet, Currant Pug, Early Thorn, 4 Willow Beauties and Common Rustic agg.
Update Sept: Jon kindly gen detted the Oegoconia and it proved to be Oegoconia quadripuncta.
Thursday 11th August
A reasonably good night for moths by recent standards which included my first Emmetia marginea, second Epiblema foenella and these:
probable Paraswammerdamia nebulella, 2 Brown House-moths, White-shouldered House-moth, Blastobasis lignea, Hook-marked Straw Moth, Light Brown Apple Moth, 2 Twenty-plume Moths, 3 Pearl Veneers, 3 Agriphila tristella, 2 Eudonia mercurella, Garden Pebble, 2 Mother of Pearls, Bee Moth, 3 Emmelina monodactyla, Small Blood-vein, Riband Wave, 2 Garden Carpets, Yellow Shell, Wormwood Pug, Tawny Speckled Pug, Early Thorn, 3 Willow Beauties, Flame Shoulder, 2 Lesser Broad-bordered Yellow Underwings and Straw Dot.
Also a Pug that I can't identify - probably a Common Pug but I'm not quite convinced - comments welcome! (thanks Jon - looks like Common)
Wednesday 10th August
Stopped at Houghton in my lunch break again today but there were only 6 large gulls there when I arrived, although one was a Herring Gull which seems to be rarer than Yellow-legged Gull at this site! They weren't far away though and by the time I left about 50 or so had appeared, and among them at least 5 Yellow-legged Gulls.
Tonight's moths were again unimpressive although my third or fourth Bryotropha affinis this year makes me wonder if I've just been overlooking them in the past, and Light Brown Apple Moth must have been the first of a new generation as there have been none since 5 in early June. Apart from these just a few common species:
Brown House-moth, 2 Blastobasis lignea, 2 Pearl Veneers, 2 Garden Carpets and Common Rustic agg.
Tuesday 9th August
The poor weather for mothing continues:
2 Pearl Veneers, Agriphila tristella, Single-dotted Wave and Garden Carpet.
Monday 8th August
Nothing better than a Cabbage Moth tonight, although Common Wainscot was my first here this year.
White-shouldered House-moth, 2 Pearl Veneers, Agriphila tristella, Emmelina monodactyla, 2 Willow Beauties, Common Rustic agg. and Straw Dot.

Sunday 7th August
Best moths tonight were Large Fruit-tree Tortrix and Blood-vein but it was pretty much all run-of-the-mill stuff:
Brown House-moth, Twenty-plume Moth, Pearl Veneer, 2 Agriphila tristella, Endotricha flammealis, Garden Pebble,3 Emmelina monodactyla, Single-dotted Wave, Early Thorn, 2 Willow Beauties and Lesser Broad-bordered Yellow Underwing.

Saturday 6th August
I joined Rob this evening for some heathland mothing at Kelling. We did ok despite clearing skies, notching up several lifers: Monochroa cytisella, Apotomis betuletana, Epinotia ramella*, Cydia ulicetana, Dioryctria simplicella, Scalloped Hook-tip, Large Emerald, 2 Lesser Swallow Prominents, White-line Dart and 4+ True Lover's Knots.
*Update 20th August: the Epinotia ramella was f. costana, a variation that isn't shown in most of the websites and consequently we couldn't identify it correctly at first. Unfortunately we did find one on the Essex moths website but here it was labelled as Ancylis laetana (presumably incorrectly), leading us to identify it as that in error. Now fixed thanks to Rob!
Other species I've not recorded very often were Catoptria pinella, Canary-shouldered Thorn, Pebble Prominent, Black Arches (after my first at home yesterday), Rosy Footman, 4 Scarce Footmen, Least Yellow Underwing, 2 Nutmegs, Antler Moth and White-point. Also recorded were:
Blastobasis lignea, 2 Argyrotaenia ljungiana, Pearl Veneer, 2 Eudonia mercurella, 2 Endotricha flammealis, 3 Riband Wave, Common Carpet, Wormwood Pug, 3 Scalloped Oaks, Willow Beauty, 2 Yellow-tails, 2 Dingy Footmen, Buff Ermine, 3 Shuttle-shaped Darts, Flame Shoulder, 2 Lesser Broad-bordered Yellow Underwings, 2 Setaceous Hebrew Characters, 2 Clays, 2 Common Wainscots, 3 Dark Arches and Uncertain.
Back at the ranch the bedroom light was on and the windows open so the mothing wasn't over yet. New for the year were my second ever Small Scallop , second-for-here Vapourer and third Tawny Speckled Pug. Blood-vein was also my first here this year. The rest were:
Oegoconia sp., Blastobasis lignea, 2 Pearl Veneers, Agriphila tristella, Scoparia ambigualis, Endotricha flammealis, 3 Emmelina monodactlyla, Small Dusty Wave, 2 Riband Waves, Wormwood Pug, Yellow-barred Brindle, Lesser Broad-bordered Yellow Underwing, Dark Arches and Common Rustic agg.
Friday 5th August
Spent lunch at the pig farm at Houghton again where there were more gulls and with them more Yellow-legged Gulls. A bare minimum of 7 were seen, but I suspect a careful count would have revealed far more (especially as I struggle to pick out the younger ones). It's like being in southern Europe (except the weather and the pigs).
A few moths tonight included one stunning new macro. I first saw it on the outside of the window and even from that view I could tell it was something interesting. Not a rarity by any means but a first for me and one of the smartest moths I've ever seen: Black Arches. Other interesting macros were a White-point and a Dun-bar while micros included what I think was Bryotropha terrella*. Also:
Coleophora sp.*, Brown House-moth, Oegoconia sp., Blastobasis lignea, 2 Garden Grass-veneers, 4 Pearl Veneers, 3 Agriphila tristella, Eudonia mercurella, Garden Pebble, 2 Endotricha flammealis, 3 Emmelina monodactyla, Small Dusty Wave, 2 Riband Waves, Dingy Footman and Fan-foot.
* Update Sept: thanks to Jon for two gen. dets.: he confirmed the Bryotropha terrella was as I thought and identified the Coleophora as Coleophora sternipennella.
Thursday 4th August
Not a great night for moths, although Ypsolopha scabrella was only my third (one year to the day after my first). The rest were:
5 Garden Grass-veneers, 6 Pearl Veneers, Bee Moth, 2 Emmelina monodactyla and 2 Small Dusty Waves.
|

Wednesday 3rd August
I've not seen many large gulls close to the road at Houghton during my last few visits so was pleased to find a small flock of 25 Lesser Black-backed Gulls there in today's lunch break. Among them were 2 Yellow-legged Gulls - quite a good percentage I reckon!
Tonight's moths included another metallic green Coleophora (not mayrella), another Borkhausenia fuscescens, Bryotropha similis*, an Agriphila that looks pretty good for the mainly coastal A. selasella (opinions on this welcome too), my first Scorched Carpet for the year and these:
Oegoconia sp., Garden Grass-veneer, 5 Pearl Veneers, 2 Mother of Pearls, Trachycera advenella, Emmelina monodactyla, Small Dusty Wave, Riband Wave, Dingy Footman, Common Rustic agg. and Fan-foot.
* Update Sept: thanks to Jon for confirming the Bryotropha similis by gen. det.
Tuesday 2nd August
The clear highlght from tonight was a Zelleria hepariella - a rare moth with just 4 previous records in Norfolk. Also an Oak Bush-Cricket and this lot:
Parornix sp., Brown House-moth, White-shouldered House-moth, 2 Oegoconia sp., 3 Hook-marked Straw Moths, Eucosma cana, 3 Twenty-plume Moths, Garden Grass-veneer, 2 Pearl Veneers, Garden Pebble, Mother of Pearl, Endotricha flammealis, 3 Small Blood-veins, Small Dusty Wave, 6 Riband Waves, Yellow Shell, Double-striped Pug, Lesser Broad-bordered Yellow Underwing, Straw Dot and Fan-foot.

Not the best night for moths - one new for the year was Blastobasis lignea (aka adustella), though in past years I've had several by this time. Apart from that just this lot:
5 Brown House-moths, White-shouldered House-moth, 3 Oegoconia sp., Hook-marked Straw Moth, Twenty-plume Moth, Garden Grass-veneer, 4 Pearl Veneers, 2 Agriphila tristella, Eudonia mercurella, Udea lutealis, 2 Mother of Pearls, Endotricha flammealis, 3 Riband Waves, Willow Beauty and Lesser Broad-bordered Yellow Underwing.
