November 2009
Sunday 29th November
After failing to see the Ring-necked Duck at Wroxham I moved on to Martham Broad where the highlight was this splendid drake Pochard x Ferruginous Duck hybrid. Also at least 5 Goldeneye and a Kingfisher there.

Tuesday 24th November
They're meant to be very common but the last time I identified one of these was on Christmas Day 2006.

Saturday 21st November
By this time of year I don't expect to see many moths, except perhaps the rather dull Epirrita or Winter Moths. So three good macros this evening was a surprise. One was my second ever Dark Chestnut (I think) and the other two were my first ever Scarce Umbers.

A few Pinks, but nothing among them despite the mud making one or two look a bit orange-billed.

Tuesday 17th November
On the way to work 2 Little Egrets flew over the A1067 at Twyford. Yesterday I discovered a large flock of Pink-feet between Shernborne and Amner but they were extremely skittish and were flushed by cyclists and a tractor before I got a good look through them. Today they were still rather nervous but I managed to pick up a Pale-bellied Brent Goose among them.

Thursday 12th November
In the arable farmland of NW Norfolk winter is synonomous with Pink-footed Geese and many of my lunch breaks are spent searching for or through flocks, looking for the scarcer species that often accompany them. I also keep an eye on the neck collars as many of them are fitted with collars inscribed with 3 letters that identify them individually. I always feel slightly sorry for the one carrying LAV round its neck, as if it could read! I first saw this bird in December 2003, found it again in December 2008 and again today.

Saturday 7th November
After missing the last couple of outings I joined my monthly group once again today, this time heading up to Titchwell. Some were impressed by the vast flocks of Golden Plovers flying around - must have been thousands there. The most unusual observation from a Titchwell perspective was a family party of 4 Whooper Swans but on the sea the Slav Grebes had sloped off leaving only an elusive Great Northern Diver.
